Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Case Study: Using Technology to Accelerate Information Flow

Topics: Strategy Integration, Technology & Infrastructure

Contents

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is a leading player in the IT services and consulting space, with 180,000 employees worldwide. The business involves developing, supporting and maintaining software applications from multiple centers across the globe with geographically distributed teams. Being in a knowledge intensive industry, employees need to be at the cutting edge of technology and business to be effective in delivering results that will enable the company to continue to grow. The size and spread of the organization, the extremely demanding and dynamic nature of business, and increasing statutory and compliance requirements pose multiple challenges to meeting the learning needs of the company's employees.

The needs were many: common understanding of the work, different time zones, quick response to changes, lack of time to be away, mandatory compliance training requirements, and the wide variety of technical and domain training requirements. The learning group at Tata felt that these challenges could be met through the increased use of technology-based learning solutions. This led to the formation of the Learning Technology Solutions Group (LTSG) as a part of the Learning & Development (L&D) function. LTSG was tasked with the broad responsibilities of creating technology-enabled learning content and facilitating management and dissemination of learning through automation. The multi-pronged strategy used by LTSG included the identification and dissemination of third party content, setting up an in-house content creation team, providing a virtual classroom infrastructure, and more.

The resulting increase in available courseware, and the participation of all of Tata Consulting's employees in technology-based learning of all sorts has resulted in the continued growth of the company. The Learning & Development (L&D) group continues to be a strong strategic partner, as measured by the company's Balanced Scorecard.

Challenge

To assure that 180,000 IT consultants in multiple countries have a common, up-to-date knowledge base.
