Notes from HRD 2012: L&D Practitioners becoming curators, not creators and need to layer in pertinent social technologies.
At the HRD conference in the UK last week, the theme of content curation and integrating social learning aspects to training and development efforts took center stage. Claire Churchard summarized some of the discussions in this article, and it's worth a quick review. As Ms. Churchard noted from the Learning in the Social Workplace panel, employees are already informally using tools such as Twitter and LinkedIn on their mobile phones to research new techniques. This puts the onus on L&D to signpost them to the best content, as the panelists explained. Sam Hackett, global staff development manager at the charity Save the Children, explained that social media had really helped them when they wanted to offer more training to their staff in the field, for example working in Ethiopia. Hackett said that most staff use their mobiles to access information, and 90 per cent of them are already using social media as part of their learning. She explained that this shift in how staff access learning has led to a different emphasis in L&D roles at the charity. Read "HRD 2012: Social media 'replacing e-learning' for L&D professionals"
Thoughts on the value of the platform Pinterest as a way to share information across a group.
Pinterest is great for sharing your photos, hobbies, and work. But some creative learning and development professionals are rethinking its abilities, and created a social calendar, by working together. Esteban Contreras (Social Media Marketing Manager for Samsung USA) suggests that people are willing to use Pinterest as a collaboration tool. He also learned that Pinterest has a long way to go to make this a viable option for serious curators and collaborators. These are 10 reasons why Pinterest is so addicting: Self-Expression, Curiosity, Accomplishment, Curation, Community, Relevance, Anti-Boredom, Life Planning, Escape and Engagement. The sinking public trust in contemporary institutions is a multifaceted phenomenon with political, sociological, economic, and psychological antecedents and consequences. Restoring Trust in Organizations and Leaders is the first volume to adopt the multidisciplinary approach required to understand this decline and to propose and assess remedies. Editors Roderick M. Kramer and Todd L. Pittinsky have assembled contributions from leading psychologists, sociologists, economists, and organizational theorists. In response to such blows to public confidence as the scandals in the Roman Catholic Church, numerous corporate accounting frauds, widespread retirement insecurity, the inadequacy of many school systems, and the failure of politicians in the United States and Europe to come to grips with the economic crisis, Restoring Trust offers a compelling and mind-opening mix of theory, examples, and practical prescription for the critical social problem of restoring public trust in organizations, institutions, and their leaders. In the book Leverage Leadership, Paul Bambrick-Santoyo (Managing Director of Uncommon Schools) shows leaders how they can raise their schools to greatness by following a core set of principles. These seven principles, or "levers," allow for consistent, transformational, and replicable growth. With intentional focus on these areas, leaders will leverage much more learning from the same amount of time investment. Fundamentally, each of these seven levers answers the core questions of school leadership: What should an effective leader do, and how and when should they do it. Aimed at all levels of school leadership, the book is for any principal, superintendent, or educator who wants to be a transformational leader. It also has a lot to say to those who run corporate training units as well. The book's companion DVD includes 30 video clips of top-tier leaders in action. These videos bring great schools to you, and support a deeper understanding of both the components of success and how it looks as a whole. There are also many helpful rubrics, extensive professional development tools, calendars, and templates. The book will be released on June 26, 2012. Buy Now

“In my particular case, I certainly care about the HR functions, but that’s not why I wake up every day. I care about advancing the ball down the field with our people’s professional development skills and knowledge. You guys focus 100% on the learning piece, and that’s what I like.”
